"UPS" and "inverter" are often used loosely, but they solve slightly different problems. The key difference is how fast they take over when the power cuts — and what you're protecting. Here's the clear version.

- A UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) switches over almost instantly — fast enough that a computer doesn't reboot. It typically keeps the battery in the loop so there's virtually no gap.
- A home inverter has a small changeover delay when the grid fails — usually fine for fans, lights and a TV, which don't care about a few milliseconds, but potentially enough to restart a desktop PC.
