For home backup and solar, the battery is the part that wears out — so its chemistry decides your long-run cost. The practical choice in India is between tubular lead-acid and lithium (usually LiFePO4). Here's the honest comparison.
Cycle life — how many charge/discharge cycles
- Tubular lead-acid: roughly 500–1,500 cycles depending on quality and how deeply it's discharged.
- Lithium (LiFePO4): roughly 3,000–6,000+ cycles.
Lithium simply lasts far longer — often several battery replacements' worth of lead-acid over its life.
Depth of discharge (usable capacity)
- Lead-acid: you should only use ~50% of rated capacity regularly; going deeper shortens life sharply. So a 150 Ah lead-acid battery gives ~75 Ah of comfortable daily use.
- Lithium: can be discharged 80–90%+ routinely. More of the rated capacity is actually usable, so a smaller lithium pack can match a larger lead-acid one.
Maintenance
- Tubular lead-acid: needs ventilation and periodic water top-up (for flooded types); terminals can corrode.
- Lithium: essentially maintenance-free, sealed, with a built-in BMS (battery management system) protecting it.
Weight & space
- Lead-acid is heavy and bulky.
- Lithium is much lighter and more compact for the same usable energy — easier to wall-mount or place.
Charging speed & efficiency
- Lithium charges faster and is more round-trip efficient, which matters for solar (you capture more of the day's generation).
- Lead-acid charges slower and loses more energy as heat.
Safety
- Quality LiFePO4 is a stable lithium chemistry with a BMS for protection — a good safety record when using certified cells and packs.
- Lead-acid is proven but involves acid and hydrogen off-gassing, hence the ventilation requirement.
Cost — upfront vs lifetime
- Upfront: lead-acid is cheaper to buy.
- Lifetime: lithium's far longer cycle life and higher usable capacity often make its cost per usable kWh over the years lower, despite the higher sticker price.
Think in cost per usable cycle, not just purchase price. A cheaper battery you replace three times can cost more than one lithium pack that outlives them all.
Which should you choose?
- Tight upfront budget, modest daily cycling, occasional backup: tubular lead-acid can make sense.
- Daily deep cycling (especially with solar), long horizon, want low maintenance and compact size: lithium usually wins on lifetime value.
