Solar inverter (PCU) vs a normal inverter

What a solar inverter / PCU does differently from a normal home inverter — MPPT solar charging, grid savings, and whether it's worth the extra cost in India.

A normal inverter only charges its battery from the grid. A solar inverter (PCU) can charge from sunlight too — which is what lets you actually save on your bill. Here's the difference and when each fits.

What a normal inverter does

A standard home inverter charges the battery from the grid, then powers your loads during a cut. It's pure backup — it never lowers your electricity bill, because all the energy it stores came from the grid in the first place. (Sizing and buying: inverter guide.)

What a solar inverter (PCU) adds

A PCU (Power Conditioning Unit) — the common name for a solar inverter — connects to solar panels and includes a solar charge controller (ideally MPPT, which extracts maximum power from the panels). Its smart priority logic typically is:

  1. Run your loads from solar when the sun is out,
  2. Charge the battery from solar,
  3. Fall back to the grid only when solar/battery are insufficient.

That ordering is what turns stored energy into actual savings — you're running on sunlight, not grid units.

PWM vs MPPT (inside solar inverters)

  • PWM charge controllers are cheaper but less efficient.
  • MPPT controllers harvest more from the same panels, especially in variable light — worth it for most systems.

Cost vs benefit

  • A normal inverter is cheaper but only ever a backup device.
  • A solar inverter/PCU costs more, but cuts your bill by using free solar first, and still gives backup. Over time the savings can justify the premium.

Which should you buy?

  • Just want backup during cuts, no plan for solar → a normal pure-sine inverter is enough.
  • Have or plan solar panels → a solar inverter (PCU), so you get savings + backup in one unit and don't have to replace it later.

If there's any chance you'll add solar, buying a PCU now avoids paying twice. If you'll never add panels, don't pay the solar premium — a normal inverter does the backup job.
