E-rickshaw batteries: lithium vs lead-acid

For an e-rickshaw, lithium and lead-acid batteries differ sharply on life, weight, charging and cost. A practical comparison for high-utilisation commercial use.

For an e-rickshaw run all day, the battery choice decides your uptime, earnings and running cost. The two options — traditional lead-acid and lithium (LiFePO4) — behave very differently under heavy commercial use. Here's the practical comparison. Life under heavy daily cycling

An e-rickshaw discharges deeply every single day, which is exactly where the gap is widest:

  • Lead-acid packs, cycled hard daily, often last on the order of ~1–1.5 years before capacity (and range) drops noticeably.
  • Lithium (LiFePO4) typically lasts several times longer in cycles — often 3–5 years of daily use — because it tolerates deep discharge far better.

Weight and range

  • Lead-acid is heavy, which eats into payload and range.
  • Lithium is much lighter for the same usable energy — more range and a nimbler vehicle.

Charging time and downtime

  • Lithium charges faster and more efficiently — less time off the road, more earning hours.
  • Lead-acid charges slowly and wastes more energy as heat.

Maintenance

  • Lead-acid needs water top-up, ventilation, and careful charging; neglect shortens its already-short life.
  • Lithium is maintenance-free with a built-in BMS that protects the pack.

Cost: upfront vs cost-per-day

  • Upfront: lead-acid is cheaper to buy — its main appeal.
  • Over time: lithium's far longer life, higher usable capacity and lower downtime often make its cost per day of running lower, despite the higher purchase price. Think cost per earning-day, not sticker price.
Replace a cheap lead-acid pack every year or so, versus one lithium pack that runs for years — do the multi-year sum before deciding.

Which to choose

  • Very tight upfront budget, willing to replace often: lead-acid still gets many drivers started.
  • Maximising uptime, range and multi-year value: lithium usually wins for a full-time e-rickshaw.

Either way, insist on standard-compliant cells and, for lithium, a proper BMS.
