Solar panels have no moving parts, but they aren't fully "fit and forget" — especially in dusty India. A little upkeep protects the generation you paid for over a 25-year life. Here's what matters.
Cleaning: the biggest, cheapest win
Dust is the number-one output killer in India. A layer of dust, pollen or bird droppings can noticeably cut generation. To keep output up:
- Rinse/wipe panels regularly — more often in dusty, dry regions and during high-pollution or pollen seasons.
- Clean early morning or evening (never on hot panels with cold water).
- Use plain water and a soft brush/cloth — avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive tools.
- After a good rain, panels often self-clean — but streaks and residue can remain.
If your generation drops but the sun is fine, check for dust or new shading first — it's the most common and easily-fixed cause.
Watch for shading
A new water tank, a growing tree, an antenna or a neighbouring construction can cast shade that disproportionately cuts output (even partial shade on one panel drags down a string). Periodically check the panels' sun path stays clear.
Inverter and connections
- The inverter is the hardest-working component and the one most likely to need service over the system's life — keep it ventilated and dust-free, and note any fault lights.
- Get an electrician to check connections, cabling and earthing periodically — loose or corroded joints lose power and are a safety risk.
Monitor your output
Most modern systems have monitoring (app or portal). Watch daily/monthly generation against expectation. A steady, unexplained decline flags dust, shading, a failing panel or an inverter issue early — before it costs you months of lost generation.
Understanding degradation
Panels slowly lose output with age — this is normal. Typical degradation is a small fraction of a percent per year, and performance warranties usually guarantee something like ~80–90% of rated output even at ~25 years. So a good panel still produces strongly decades in. Sudden drops, though, aren't degradation — they're a fault to investigate.
A simple maintenance rhythm
- Frequently: visual check + clean off dust/droppings.
- Periodically: check for new shading; glance at monitoring trends.
- Annually (or via AMC): professional check of inverter, wiring, earthing and mounting.
An AMC (annual maintenance contract) with your installer is worth it for larger systems. Good upkeep is how a solar system delivers the payback you modelled in rooftop solar basics — and protects the asset IndiaCard's financing helped put on your roof.
