Most EV charging in India happens at home, overnight — it's the cheapest and most convenient way. Done right, it's simple and safe. Here's what you need to know.
The basic setup
- Small e-2W: many charge from a regular 5/15A household socket using the supplied charger — no special wiring for modest batteries.
- Larger EVs / cars: benefit from a dedicated charging point on its own properly-rated circuit with correct cabling, an MCB, and good earthing. Get this installed by a licensed electrician — don't improvise.
Cost per charge — the big saving
Your electricity cost to "fill up" is simply:
Cost = battery size (kWh) × your tariff (₹ per unit)
Check your electricity bill for your per-unit rate. Because tariffs are modest, a full charge costs a small fraction of the equivalent petrol — the core reason EV running costs are so low. Charging overnight is convenient and, where time-of-day tariffs exist, can be cheaper still.
Charging time
Depends on the battery size and charger output. Small two-wheelers often charge in a few hours; larger batteries take longer on a normal home point. Plan around overnight charging so the vehicle is full each morning.
Safety — non-negotiables
- Use a dedicated, properly-earthed circuit for larger EVs; avoid loose or under-rated wiring.
- Never charge through a flimsy extension cord or a multi-plug board — it can overheat.
- Charge in a dry, ventilated spot; don't cover the charger or battery while charging.
- Use the manufacturer's charger and cable; mismatched chargers risk the battery and its warranty (see battery basics).
- If anything overheats, smells or sparks, stop and get it checked.
A one-time, correctly-installed charging point is cheap insurance. Bad wiring is the main home-charging hazard — spend on the electrician, not on shortcuts.
Apartments and societies
If you live in a flat, discuss a metered charging point in your parking with the society — many now allow a sub-meter so your charging is billed to you. This is increasingly common as EVs grow.
Home charging is what makes EV ownership genuinely cheap. If the vehicle's upfront cost is the hurdle, financing spreads it over time — IndiaCard matches clean-mobility buyers to regulated lenders so you can go electric sooner.
